Saving money isn’t about finding the “cheapest channel” — it’s about controlling three things: billed weight, channel mix and customs compliance. Consolidate well, lean on sea freight and declare honestly — the same shipment can cost 30%–50% less.
Move 1: Consolidate to dilute fixed fees
Every parcel pays its own first-weight minimum and handling fee. Three separate 2 kg parcels cost far more than one consolidated 6 kg box. Order from the same shop where possible, and wait until all parcels arrive before submitting consolidation so fixed fees spread across more kilograms.
Move 2: Attack volumetric weight
Soft, bulky goods are where budgets die. Strip shoe boxes and gift boxes that add volume but no protection; vacuum-compress duvets and cushions to halve their size; choose regular rectangular cartons. Billed weight = max(actual, L×W×H÷6000) — every tier you shave off is real money.
Move 3: Split cargo by urgency, ship bulk by sea
Sort shipments into two tiers: everyday restocks, seasonal clothes and stock-ups go by sea (25–45 days, lowest cost); only documents, samples and urgent small items justify air or express. The most common waste is “express everything” — that multiplies freight 4–6×.
Move 4: Use the free storage window, dodge peak season
The China warehouse typically offers 30–60 days of free storage — accumulate goods and ship one full load. Avoid September–December when Double 11, Black Friday and Christmas stack up and space premiums spike; non-urgent cargo shipped by late September enjoys near-normal rates and transit.
Move 5: Declare honestly — don’t gamble on low values
Under-declaring saves a small duty while risking back taxes, penalties of 20%–40% of value, or seizure and return — especially since the US ended the US$800 de minimis exemption in 2025 and inspection rates rose. Declare the true price and keep receipts; over time it’s the cheapest strategy.
Move 6: Buy insurance selectively
Insurance runs 1%–3% of declared value. Insure high-value items (over US$700) and fragile goods (ceramics, glass, electronics) in full; skip it for low-value durable goods and spend the budget on better packing instead.
Move 7: Ask support to run the numbers first
The same shipment can bill at very different weights and rates across channels. Before confirming consolidation, send product names, weights and dimensions to support for a channel-by-channel comparison at today’s prices. It costs nothing — and often saves the price of a nice dinner.
